AP Biology Investigation #12 – Fruit Fly Behavior

• Experiment kit designed to teach and demonstrate animal behavior as a result of various stimuli, and offer experience in experiment design
• Using fruit flies as test subjects, students will test whether flies will move towards or away from the scent of chemicals and food that helps them survive, then come up with their own experiment
• Kit contains enough material for 8 groups, including chemicals, and student exercise copymasters – a voucher for perishable fruit fly cultures is included in the kit

Students will study whether fruit flies move towards or away from important chemicals and food that aid in their survival. Using the Innovating Science choice behavior chamber, behaviors of the fruit flies are observed, and any pattern can be identified. Students will formulate their own theories based on the response of the fruit flies to the chemicals and foods, and then determine what materials and experiments should be tested furhter. Meets AP Science Practices1, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7, and Big Idea 4. Materials provided for up to eight lab groups.
